Boerhaave's syndrome: diagnosis and successful primary repair one month after the oesophageal perforation.

چکیده
Boerhaave's syndrome (Spontaneous oesophageal perforation following forceful vomiting) is uncommon. However, when it occurs and the appropriate treatment is not given on time, it is fraught with early complications, leading to a very high mortality rate. This is a characteristic feature of this syndrome. Patient survival is in days. We present the case of an uncommon scenario of this syndrome in which the actual diagnosis was made one month after the oesophageal perforation, which was followed by primary repair, with a very good outcome.

Boerhaave syndrome (BS) is a spontaneous esophageal perforation and is a life-threating but uncommon disorder. This syndrome involves a transmural perforation and typically occurs after forceful emesis. The prognosis is dependent on rapid diagnosis and correct management. The classic presentation of BS consists of vomiting, subcutaneous emphysema, and lower thoracic pain. However, significant s...

Boerhaave's syndrome or spontaneous oesophageal perforation, is a potentially lethal and frequently elusive medical condition which presents not only a diagnostic but also a therapeutic challenge. It is insufficiently considered in diagnostic hypotheses, yet may be confirmed or excluded by simple methods such as an erect chest film and a contrast study of the oesophagus. Errors in diagnosis are...
متن کاملPrimary esophageal repair for Boerhaave's syndrome whatever the free interval between perforation and treatment.
OBJECTIVES Boerhaave's syndrome is the most sinister cause of esophageal perforation responsible with mortality rate ranging from 20 to 30%. Combination of mediastinal contamination with microorganisms, gastric acid and digestives enzymes, long free interval between injury and initiation of treatment causes severe mediastinitis which is fatal in most untreated cases. The aim of this paper is to...
متن کاملA delayed presentation of Boerhaave's syndrome with mediastinitis managed using the over-the-scope clip
Boerhaave syndrome is a spontaneous perforation of the oesophagus secondary to forceful emesis. Surgery has been advocated in delayed presentations of Boerhaave's syndrome with mediastinitis. The over-the-scope clip (OTSC) by OVESCO(®) (Tubingen, Germany) has been used in the endoscopic management of gastrointestinal bleeds, fistulae and anastamotic leaks. We describe the successful endoscopic ...
متن کاملMultimodality Imaging Approach For The Early Diagnosis Boerhaave Syndrome.
Boerhaave's syndrome is a spontaneous transmural rupture or perforation of the oesophagus or post-emesis oesophageal rupture. Boerhaave's syndrome has a high risk of morbidity and mortality, and early, definitive diagnosis leading to prompt management improves outcomes. Definitive diagnosis of this syndrome is made with imaging, including x-ray, USG and computed tomography Scan. This is a case ...
